Department of Pharmacology was established in 1996 when Subharti Dental College came into existence at Lokpriya Hospital, Garh Road, Meerut. It was first headed by Dr. R.S. Saxena. In 2000 the department found its new and permanent home, on third floor of Subharti Medical College building. From catering to 100 MBBS & 100 BDS students, it grew in leaps and bounds to accommodate teaching of 150 MBBS students, 100 BDS and similar numbers of BPT, B. Sc Nursing & Paramedical students.

Post graduation in the subject of Pharmacology started from the year 2009, till date 19 PG students have passed out and are doing well in their jobs. Department also offers Ph. D courses.

Since the year 2005, Department of Pharmacology is engaged in Adverse drug reaction reporting under National Pharmacovigilance Programme of India and is one out of total 346 Adverse drug reaction Monitoring Centers (AMC). From July 2021 the department has also been nominated as Medical Device Adverse Reaction Monitoring Centre under Materiovigilance Program of India. For smooth running of both these programs, we have a Pharmacovigilance Associate nominated by Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC), National coordinating centre of National Pharmacovigilance Program and Materiovigilance Program.

From the year 2014 department is actively participating in clinical trials and till date 07 trials have been completed in collaboration with various clinical departments.

From the year 2007 department is maintaining Central Animal House for housing and care of experimental laboratory animals used by various departments and colleges for animal experimentation. We have a veterinary doctor on roll. The animal house is approved by CPCSEA, Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India since 2008.

Faculty members of the department are heading or are member of important committees of college namely IEC, IAEC, Pharmacovigilance Committee, Medical Education Unit, Drugs & Therapeutic Committee, NAAC.

Whole department is hard working, sincere and devoted to the College & University.

Objectives of Pharmacology department:

· Define and describe the principles of Pharmacology, pharmacotherapeutics, evidence based medicine, pharmacovigilance, parts of generic prescription, rational prescribing and essential medicines.

· Discuss mechanism of action, pharmacokinetic principles, pharmacodynamic aspects, therapeutic uses, adverse drug reactions, contraindications and important drug interactions of various group of drugs.

· Communicate effectively with patients & public on all aspects of drug use, with representatives of pharmaceutical companies to get authentic information on drugs.

· Describe drugs of abuse, occupational and environmental pesticides, food adulterants, pollutants and insect repellents.

The new CBME Curriculum has been implemented in MBBS teaching. Integration and alignment with other departments is practiced. Regular tests and tutorials help students to keep revising the topics covered in classes. During practical classes clinically relevant topics are covered as mentioned in the new curriculum like proper use of medical devices, communicating with the patients on proper use of prescribed medicines, essential medicine lists for healthcare facilities, Personal or P drugs for common conditions, writing a rational prescription for common conditions, critical analysis of drug promotional literature according to WHO criteria.

Students also get trained in recognizing adverse drug reaction and how to report it by filling CDSCO ADR form.
