The Department of Anaesthesiology at Subharti Medical College is one of the largest departments, which has over the years expanded from a nuclear family to a large joint family. The department was set up in 2001 under the leadership of Dr. (Col.) M. Kapadia that was relinquished the post due to personal reasons in 2005, thereafter Dr. (Mrs.) S. Akhtar, took over and after her retirement in 2007, Dr Nirankar Dev took the reign of the dept. Prof. (Brig.) V.P. Singh, an alumnus of AFMC, a Cardiac anesthesiologist and a PhD degree holder in Anaesthesiology headed our department from 02-08-2010 to 31-08-2020. After which he became Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Swami Vivekanand Subharti University, Meerut. The department is currently running under the headship of Prof. (Dr.) Bhawana Rastogi from 01-09-2020.

Over the years, along with the development of medical sciences, the department has set up its own high standards in patient care, education and research. All clinical departments are anchored to this speciality. Currently Subharti Hospital has 15 OTS with specialized OTs for different surgical branches. Recent feather to the cap is opening of 2 Modular OTs with all the latest advancement

Postgraduate course (MD) is of three years duration and includes a thesis. The selection is based on NEET PG exam. Now Anaesthesiology Department have 10 recognized MD seats per year. Residents join this department from various parts of the country. The department follows an integrated approach and standard protocols for patient care, education and research. All Postgraduates are rotated in all surgical specialties, intensive care units and clinics. The department has developed its own guidelines at par with international guidelines for anesthetic procedures to be undertaken and the curriculum planning for the junior residents.The thesis is essential for partial fulfillment for the final examination. All junior residents take part in the didactic teaching activities regularly. The activities are for 5 days a week, which includes seminars, journal clubs, case discussion, tutorials & faculty lectures etc. This is in addition to daily teaching activity based on the cases conducted in the operation theatres & Intensive Care Unit.

The department runs the Pre Anaesthesia Clinic every day 9 AM – 4 PM in the PAC room. Pain Clinic is run every day between 10 AM – 03 PM. In the pain clinic facilities for various modalities of pain therapy viz. regional blocks, neurolytic blocks with or without ultrasound aid. Ozone therapy and fluoroscopy are also available.

Faculty and residents are encouraged to attend, present scientific papers at national and international conferences. Dept. has organized a state-level CME in April 2011, another ISA sponsored CME was organized in October 2013, CME was organized based on Anaesthesia Update on 14th November 2014, CME & Workshop was organized on Hands on Basic & Advanced Transthoracic Echocardiography (TEE) on 27th & 28th February 2016, CME was organized on Lactic Acidosis By Dr. (Prof.) C.K. Pandey, ILBS, New Delhi, Guest Lecture organized in 14th December 2019 Prof. (Gp. Capt.) Manish Dhawan, an eminent faculty in the field of Critical Care Medicine from Army Hospital (R&R) Delhi. Every year “World Anaesthesia Day” Celebrated on 16th October with Guest Lectures on New Trends in Anaesthesiology & Critical Care. Recently our Department organized CME based on Recent Trends in Anaesthesia on 08th September 2021 with 03 credit hours from UP Medical Council.

Dept. is also responsible to run Critical Care services of 80 beds including Surgical ICU, Resp ICU, Medicine ICU, Cardiac Care ICU, Neuro ICU, Holding ICU etc under dedicated and full-time Anaesthesiologists. Dept. is also managing central sterilization supply dept. (CSSD) and hospital medical gas pipeline supply system including liquid oxygen plant and oxygen generator.

Dept. is also running CPR courses/workshops for Doctor / Residents and Non-Teaching Staff. An AHA accredited BLS/ ACLS workshop with the help of AHA recognized faculty from Max HealthCare Institute was organized by the Dept. on 24th to 26th March 2012 for doctors and residents with overwhelming response.

Dept. has a unique CPR Lab (CPR Training Center) at the Dept. Dept. regularly conducts certificate course in ACLS & BLS for all doctors/ residents / non-teaching staff/ corporate/ community.
